ASSISTANT PROGRAMME OFFICER- ADVOCACY & POLICY DEVELOPMENT

DIVISION / DEPARTMENT: ADVOCACY, POLICY DEVELOPMENT AND GOVERNANCE

LOCATION: Nairobi ( With travel within the region)

REPORTING LINES:
Post holder reports to: Program Officer- Advocacy & Policy Development
Staff reporting to this post: Interns, Volunteers

RCK PURPOSE: To protect and promote the rights and dignity of refugees and other forced migrants through enabling programmes on legal aid, advocacy and awareness creation.
JOB PURPOSE: Contribute to the achievement of RCK mission of improving refugees, IDPs and other forced migrants welfare by influencing policies, systems, structures and practices of the Government and actors through lobbying and advocacy.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
 Identify and gather information on lobbying issues using RCK criteria
 Assist in the developing of lobbying strategies with stakeholders.
 Organizing advocacy workshops and writing reports
 Assists in writing media articles and briefs
 Facilitate preparation of terms of reference for any research or consultancy that the programme engages in.
 Disseminates workshop reports in consultation with the Program Officer.
 Writes monthly, quarterly, annual and other reports for advocacy & policy development programme
 Attend workshops, conferences and meetings in the field of advocacy and ensure that reports from these activities are disseminated to other programmes within RCK
 Implement the advocacy filing system and Update mailing list database
 Attends to all advocacy mail received.
 Assist in coordination and carrying out program budgetary and administrative tasks.
 Such other duties temporarily or on a continuing basis, as may reasonably be required, commensurate with your grade.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
1. Bachelor’ of arts degree in Law
2. At least 2 years experience working with the human rights sector
3. Experience in proposal and report writing
4. Ability to organize and facilitate advocacy workshops
5. Good knowledge of the Kenyan Legal system
6. Knowledge of regional and international instruments relating to refugees and general human rights.
7. Proficiency in MS Excel and Word and PowerPoint.
8. Excellent communication skills
9. Ability to communicate effectively in English and Swahili.

Working Conditions
Working conditions are normal for an office environment. Work requires willingness to work a flexible schedule and travel within the country and in the region. The job requires long hours and can be complex and stressful.
