Training of Court Users on the Refugee Law
The Advocacy Programme has embarked on a project to
sensitize judicial officers and court users on the Refugee
Act, its correlation to international human rights laws
and standards. The focus will especially be on magistrates,
prosecutors, children's officers, probation officers,
prison warders and the police working in Districts away
from Nairobi and especially in areas where there are
large population of refugees.
The aim of this training will be sensitise and to change
the mindset of the officers. Kenya has not had a refugee
law and many prosecutors and magistrates continue to
treat refugees as illegal immigrants. Training the magistrates
and prosecutors on the Refugee Act will also enable
them to keep the other arms of government accountable
in their interaction with refugees. In addition to building
positive precedent-setting cases, the engagement of
the judicial arm helps to keep the actions of the other
departments in check.
The first of these trainings takes place in Eldoret,
Rift Valley Province at the Sirikwa Hotel on 26-27 June
2008.
