RCK Trains 20 Refugee Rights Monitors
To continuously monitor the implementation of the Refugee
Act and refugee rights violations, RCK has embarked
on a project that has trained 22 Kenyans and refugees
to serve as monitors in key refugee hosting areas and
routes used during entry to Kenya. The selected monitors
have demonstrated an interest in community issues and
have fair grasp of displacement matters.
Monitoring allows RCK to continuously gauge the practices
of government and non-government actors in providing
protection for refugees and asylum seekers. It will
help RCK to identify areas for legislative or policy
advocacy in order to improve the management of refugee
affairs, hence advance refugee rights.
The monitors whom have already started presenting reports
(some of which have saved some asylum seekers from forced
return) are drawn from Kakuma and Dadaaab refugee camp,
Garissa, Marsabit, Liboyi, Wajir, Mandera, Moyale, Lamu,
Kiunga, Mombasa, Nakuru, Eastleigh, Ruiru, Lodwar, Kangemi,
Isiolo and Eldoret.
