Reconnecting refugees

RCK in partnership with Refugees United (RU) has been undertaking a project from July 2010, aiming to reconnect refugees with their loved ones through modern technological means. This is through the use of WAP enabled mobile phones and the internet. One registers their profile on the RU website with information that will enable someone to reconnect with them.

The project was piloted in Nairobi and Dadaab, but has since been scaled up to cover Kakuma in January 2011.

By end of May 2011, RCK had facilitated a total of 32,146 sign-ups in the RU database and thereby surpassed the target of 25.000 sign-ups by pilot end. The sign-ups were primarily generated via offline paper forms (99%) and data entered into the RU database by data entry clerks in Nairobi and Dadaab. The result was achieved by agreeing on up-scaling activities in Dadaab and expansion into Kakuma in the beginning of 2011. In the next phase of the joint Refugees United project with RCK, the focus is shifting from offline to online and 3rd party mobile phone sign-ups.
