RCK Staff Profiles

Lucy Kiama, Executive Director

Kiama oversees the legal aid, advocacy, and research and information programmes for asylum seekers, refugees, internally displaced persons and returnees. Previously, Lucy was the Senior Programme Advisor for Gender Based Violence & Human Rights at the GIZ Kenya. Lucy also worked as a Programme Manager at the Nairobi Women’s Hospital, managing the Gender Violence Recovery Centre. While at GIZ, Lucy provided technical assistance to the Ministry of Health to develop the National Guidelines on Management of Sexual Violence (2010). Lucy holds a Masters of Arts in Gender and Development Studies and a Bachelors degree in Social Work from the University of Nairobi. She represents RCK and the interests of Global South agencies dealing with humanitarian issues at the board of the International Council of Voluntary Agencies (ICVA) EXCOM.

Lucy is also the East African representative of the International Advisory Board of the International Detention Centre (IDC). She is in the international advisory board of the Forced Migration Review (FMR) of Refugee Studies Centre, Oxford University. Lucy is also an alumni of the International Summer School course on Forced Migration from the Refugee studies centre of Oxford University.

Simon Konzolo, Senior Programme & Advocacy Officer

Konzolo is currently pursuing an MA in Diplomacy at the University of Nairobi, Kenya. He is a trained lawyer and in charge of the advocacy programme at RCK. He deputises and supports the Executive Director in coordinating the work of RCK programmes. Konzolo has had postgraduate training on international refugee and human rights law at the American University of Cairo, Egypt; training on policy advocacy at the MS Training Centre in Development Cooperation - Arusha, Tanzania and a certificate course on forced migration from the Refugee Studies Centre, Oxford University, United Kingdom amongst others. Konzolo previously worked at the Institute for Education in Democracy (IED) and has experience in civic education, election monitoring and management. He also worked as a consultant on governance and democracy at the Projects & Allied Management services consultancy firm. Konzolo has a cumulative work experience of over nine years in programme management cycle within the civil society sector. He has seven years of experience in forced migration matters and has been involved in capacity enhancement and building partnerships to improve the protection of refugees and other forced migrants in Kenya.

Leila Murithia Simiyu, Programme Officer - Legal Aid, Nairobi

Leila is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a degree in Law from the University of Nairobi. She has experience preparing children in need of protection for pre-trial briefing, including providing advice on procedures. She enjoys training on children's rights and gender issues and has experience in providing legal aid to vulnerable groups in society.

Antony Otuku Wesonga, Finance and Administration Officer

Mr. Wesonga is a certified accountant and member of the Institute of Public Certified Accountants of Kenya (CPAK). He holds an MBA from University of Nairobi (specialized in accounting). He joined RCK in September 2011. He has ten years of experience as an accountant/finance officer in INGOs.  Mr. Wesonga has lead financial reviews and ensured compliance in multi donor environments and served for a year as a Group Accountant in the corporate world. His training and practical experience includes financial accounting, management, and analysis for critical management decision making, grants management and donor reporting. He currently serves as Finance and Administration Officer in charge of Institutional Support and Development Program at RCK. His education includes: MBA specialized in accounting, University of Nairobi – 2008, Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (CPA-K), Strathmore College - 2002 and a BA Philosophy and Religious Studies, St Augustine Mabanga Seminary – 1992 , Affiliate college of Urbaniana University  in Rome-Vatican.

Martin Pepela - Programme Manager, Kakuma

Martin has a LLB Law from Moi University, a post-graduate diploma from the Kenya School of Law and a certificate in Advanced Refugee Law from the American University of Cairo. He has worked as a practising advocate for two years with Maina Mburu Company and Advocates, undertaken a Graduate Internship Programme with World Vision Kenya on Child Rights Advocacy before joining RCK where he has been for the last 3 years. Martin established the field offices in Kakuma and Dadaab and currently heads the Kakuma office.

Imaana Fredrick Koome - Programme Manager, Dadaab

Koome is an Honours Law graduate from Moi University, Eldoret and holds a post graduate Diploma in law from the Kenya School of law. He is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a keen interest in International Human Rights Law and generally the concept of human rights. Before joining RCK, he worked as a legal assistant in a law firm. Specifically, at the national level he is interested in advocacy on the rights of both refugees and asylum seekers. His other areas of interest include, Environmental Law and Regulation. He believes that there cannot be any sustainable development without the protection of the environment.

Zuleka Ali Osman - Interpreter, Legal Aid Programme, Nairobi

Zuleka has a diploma in Community development and has been trained on counseling skills and on victims of torture. She interpretes Oromo and manages the client case files.

 

 

 

Chris Okudo - Project Assistant and Social Worker, Dadaab

Chris has three years of significant work experience in community mobilisation, social interventions and community empowerment. He has worked in a multi-cultural, multi-disciplinary environment in the Dadaab refugee camps and has pursued various trainings in refugee programmess. He holds a Higher Diploma in community development and social work and is currently pursuing a BA in social work.




Elizabeth Wangari Gitau - Social Worker, Dadaab

Elizabeth has a wealth of experience in community mobilization, counseling and social interventions with over four years working experience in implementing projects on Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons and HIV/AIDs. She holds a Higher Diploma in Social Work, Community Development and has pursed various trainings on Counseling.

Anne Gatai - Assistant Administration/Human Resources Officer

Anne holds a Group Diploma in Administrative Secretarial from Strathmore University. She has over 12 years of experience in Administration with legal and non-governmental organisations. She hopes to specialise in Human Resources.

Diana Wambui - Psychosocial Counselor, Legal Aid Programme, Nairobi

Diana is a trained counselor with experience in family and marriage therapy, SGBV issues and mediation and counseling vulnerable women and children having worked with FIDA for three years before joining RCK. She holds a higher diploma in Counseling Psychology and family therapy, certificates in HIV/AIDS counseling and Mediation and is currently pursuing a degree in Education.

Peter Nyambu - Accounts Assistant and Procurement Officer

 Peter holds a Kenya Accounts Technician's Certificate and CPA Part 1. He is currently pursuing CPA Part 2. He has been doing Accounts and Procurement for 3 years with RCK having worked in the commercial sector as an Accounts Assistant for two years prior. He holds a certificate on Forced Migration from the University of Dar es Salaam.

Dennis Likule - Assistant Programme Officer, Legal Aid Programme, Nairobi

Dennis is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya. He holds a Bachelors of Law degree (LLB) from Moi University, Kenya and a postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law. He has plenty of experience in the field of human rights, legal aid and research having been involved with several human rights initiatives and organizations. He is the founder and member of Kenya Hospices and Palliative Care (KHPCA) Legal Aid Scheme. He has worked in private practice with Mulondo, Oundo, Muriuki and Co. Advocates. His areas of interest are human rights, constitutional law and transitional justice.

Githumbi Wanjiku Fresiah – Assistant Programme Officer, Legal Aid Programme, Nairobi

Fresiah holds a LLB from Makerere University, Uganda, a postgraduate diploma in Law from Kenya School of Law and is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya. Previously she held the position of associate advocate in the firm of Mithega & Co. Advocates in charge of civil and criminal litigation and commercial law matters. She has a keen interest in children matters and vulnerable groups.

 

Peter Karera – Project Assistant, Kakuma

Peter Chris Karera is the Project Associate for the RCK Kakuma office. Karera is specially tasked with the implementation of the Refugees United Project. Karera studied Law at the University of Nairobi and is currently undertaking a Postgraduate Diploma in Law at the Kenya School of Law. He is interested in Human Rights Law and refugee protection.


Millicent Oloo - Psychosocial Counselor, Nairobi.

Millicent is a trained counselor with experience in Behaviour Change and Behavior Formation Processes. She has over three years experience with Education For Life - Kenya, working with various groups including, people living with HIV/Aids, orphans and vulnerable children, community leaders and youth. She holds a higher Diploma in Counselling Psychology, an Advanced Diploma in Community Development and certificates in HIV/AIDS training, VCT training and Training Of Facilitators. She is currently pursuing a BA in Psychology at Mount Kenya University. She enjoys facilitating group sessions with community groups and hopes to advance further in the field of Psychology.


Riva Jalipa – Programme Associate, Advocacy Programme, Nairobi

Riva studied LLB at the University of Leicester, United Kingdom and is currently pursuing a Postgraduate Diploma in Law at the Kenya School of Law. Riva has been working to expand the child protection and research activities within RCK. She is interested in governance and community work.


Rufus Karanja, Assistant Programme Officer – Advocacy Programme, Nairobi

Rufus holds a BA in Political Science and Communication from the University of Nairobi. Prior to joining RCK, he worked at South Consulting as a Research Officer monitoring Agenda III and IV issues under the KNDR framework. He also worked as an intern at Kenya Human Rights Commission attached to the Transitional Justice and Reconciliation Programme and the Research Department. He has a great interest in human rights advocacy work and peace and conflict management.

 

 

Aurelia Munene, Psychosocial Counselor Legal aid Programme- Dadaab

Aurelia has a Bachelor of Arts Psychology & Sociology at the University of Nairobi and a Diploma in Community Health Nursing (General Nursing, Midwifery and Community Health) from the Kenya Medical Training College. She has successfully worked as a Nurse in HIV/AIDS &TB programs at Medecins Sans Frontieres- France- Mathare Program and at Eastern Deanery AIDS relief Program. She has also worked as an Organizational Development and HIV/AIDS advisor with Voluntary Service Overseas- based in Benue State Nigeria. She is an alumnus of the Sexuality Development Leadership Fellowship Program at the African Sexuality Resource Centre –Lagos Nigeria. She is also an alumnus of MASHAV Care and support of Children affected by HIV/AIDS course at the Gor Meir Institute Haifa- Israel. She has been trained on Counseling skills Adults and children at the Embulbul Counseling Center Nairobi. Other skill areas include Strategic planning and management of projects, trainer of trainers, community mobilization, participatory learning and action approaches. She is interested Child Protection, Mental health, Research, Sexuality & Gender.

Dinah is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya. She holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree from Moi University and a graduate diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law. She has worked as an intern at Christian Legal Education Aid and Research (CLEAR) International, and also undertook the Graduate Internship Program at World Vision East Africa Regional Office under the Policy and Advocacy department. She is interested in advocating for the rights of refugees and other forced migrants through policy influencing, capacity building and legal aid.

Eunice Njeri Kanyita - Assistant Programme Officer - Legal Aid Programme, Dadaab

Eunice is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya. She holds a LLB from Kampala International University, Uganda and a post-graduate diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law. She has a passion in Human Rights law and enjoys providing legal aid and training the vulnerable and less privileged on legal matters.
 

 

Havana Edna Nimboro Gari, Assistant Programme Officer - Legal Aid Programme, Kakuma

Havana is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya. She studied an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice and Political Science in Oklahoma, USA, a LLB Degree (Honours) University of Wolverhampton, London United Kingdom and has a Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.  She completed her Pupillage at the firm of Miller & Company Advocates and also has experience in the Probate & Administration Department (Succession Law) at the firm of Mohamed Madhani & Co. Advocates before joining RCK. Havana will be specialising in SGBV and Refugee law. She enjoys volunteer work, travelling, reading, sports, playing guitar and the saxaphone.

 

Omolo Joseph Agutu, Assistant Programme Officer, Advocacy Programme, Nairobi

Joseph holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree from Moi University, two Master Degrees in Law from a dual degree program run jointly between New York University and National University of Singapore. He has also undergone the Advocates Training Programme at the Kenya School of Law and looks forward to the award of a post-graduate Diploma in Law. Since 2009, Joseph has been variedly involved in forced migration work in various capacities ranging from internship to the position of an Assistant Project Manager. Thus, he boasts a comprehensive understanding of the daily conditions in which most urban displaced persons live which understanding drives his work in the advocacy department. Joseph has a strong inclination towards research work with a rich mix of interest in the following areas: protection of forced migrants; intellectual property and business regulation.

Fredrick Hanga Juma, Assistant Programme Officer, Information and Research Programme

Fredrick is an accomplished Information, Communication, Research and Knowledge Management specialist with over six years plus cumulative experience. He has also worked on Records Management, Librarianship, and Information Communication Technologies (ICT’s) and various training programs in Kenya. Undertaking His Research thesis on Master of philosophy in communication studies, with an undergraduate in Information sciences.

He now oversees the following in the Information and Research Programme:-
•    Provide leadership and strategic direction  to the  Research and Information Programme;
•    Develop and coordinate all monitoring and evaluation activities for the organization;
•    Coordinate and manage the development of RCK’s publications that include a quarterly newsletter and publicity materials;
•    Develop research themes and coordinate RCK’s research efforts;
•    Manage RCK’s resource centre and the website;
•    Coordinate key events, awareness campaigns and celebration of important days to refugees;

•    Establish and maintain a network of information/research with  likeminded organizations;

Paul Mugwe, Assistant Programme Officer, Legal Aid Programme, Dadaab

Paul is advocate of the High Court of Kenya. He has experience in Civil and Criminal Litigation, Legal Aid and non-contentious legal work. He has previously worked at Mohamed Madhani &. Company Advocates, Mwaure & Mwaure Waihiga Advocates and Kenya Christian Lawyers Fellowship. His areas of interest are Human Rights, International law, Legal Research and non-contentious legal work.

Daniel, Wakasyaka, Assistant Programme Officer, Legal Aid Programme, Dadaab

Daniel studied at the University of Nairobi, Kenya to obtain an LL.B and attained a postgraduate diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law. Prior to joining RCK, he worked at Musyimi and Co. Advocates as a Legal Assistant and CRADLE, The Children Foundation as an Assistant Programme Officer-Legal Aid. He is passionate about child rights advocacy

Samuel Agaziva - Security Officer, Nairobi

Samuel has been with RCK since its inception in 1998. He works as the security officer, driver and cleaner.  

Naomi Kidusu - Office Attendant, Nairobi

Naomi has been with RCK since 1998. She manages the reception, bookkeeping, cleaning and cooking.

Bekele Sinishaw - Driver, Nairobi

Bekele joined RCK in 2010. He works as a driver, interpreter for Oromo, Amharic and Borana and dispatches mails as well as cheques.
