Improve Refugees' Lives, Urges Kajwang

Nairobi — Immigration minister Otieno Kajwang' has called for the issuance of work permits to refugees living in the country. The minister said that it was wrong for refugees to go through school and later be denied the required documents when they are ready to work.

IDPs missing out on HIV healthcare

Several refugees in Kenya illegally find themselves unable to access free HIV healthcare for fear of being found out. "Many urban refugees are exposed to HIV infection because young girls turn to prostitution to earn a living; they do not have access to reproductive health services and many refugees, especially those in urban areas who hide, do not get the right HIV prevention and treatment messages," said Simon Konzolo, a programme officer at RCK. Fresh IDP Policy for Kenya

Internally displaced people (IDPs) in Kenya are set to enjoy greater protection under a national policy that also aims to prevent future displacement and to fulfil the country's obligations under international IDP law, say analysts. The draft policy is a departure from the current approach where "IDP issues are dealt with [on an ad hoc basis], like disasters, without addressing the root causes", Simon Konzolo, a programme officer with Refugee Consortium of Kenya, told IRIN. The Department of Refugee Affairs initiated a Rapid Results Initiative (RRI) in Nairobi as in conjunction with UNHCR to capture urban refugees who are holding Mandate letters (MRC’s). A baseline survey conducted in Nairobi showed to total of 40,000 urban refugees which has since increased to 46,000 by the end of July 2010. Read More
