MIVA/OneMen

miva

OneMen is an initiative of MIVA (Stichting Missie Verkeersmiddelen Aktie), a Dutch charity that has been striving to improve the rights and well being of people in developing countries for more than 65 years. Originally, MIVA mainly supported missionaries and their assistants by providing means of communication and transport. Today the focus lies primarily upon local pioneers who, regardless of their religious convictions, stand up for justice and fight poverty. OneMen believes in the power of the individual. Throughout the world, there are people actively working to make a difference to their own community. These are local pioneers who are working on small-scale projects to improve their immediate surroundings. OneMen wants to show these pioneers that they are not on their own. OneMen does that by publicising their initiatives on the internet and by giving them practical support.

The IDC is an international coalition with a membership base of more than 200 non-governmental organisations, faith-based groups, academics, practitioners and individuals working in 50 countries globally. Coalition members research, advocate and provide direct services to and on behalf of refugees, asylum-seekers and migrants.

The IDC advocates for greater respect for the human rights of detainees; this includes preventing and limiting the use of, seeking alternatives to, and using the least restrictive forms of, immigration detention.

fmr

Forced Migration Review (FMR)

FMR has become the most widely read and consulted publication on refugee and internal displacement issues. It provides a unique global forum for sharing information, experience and policy recommendations among practitioners, policy makers, researchers and displaced people.

Southern Legal Aid Network (SRLAN)

srlan

SRLAN was set up in 2007 at a conference held in Nairobi. It is a configuration of non-governmental organisations working for the implementation of refugee rights enshrined in international human rights and refugee law.

The particular challenges that refugees face with regards access to judicial recourse in the global south have demanded an increase in rights-based advocacy for refugees, through pro bono legal aid, research and policy advocacy. The SRLAN member organisations are bound by a common desire to foster respect for the rights of refugees in the global south, whilst not all necessarily being based there. The SRLAN provides a platform for these organisations to learn from one another's experiences, and coordinate advocacy and legal challenges with the support and expertise of a network of practitioners.

National Networks:

Urban Refugee Protection Network (URPN)

The URPN is a result of the UNHCR Urban Refugee Policy, 2009 which emphasised the need to recognise urban areas as legitimate places for refugees and asylum seekers to reside and exercise the rights to which they are entitled. It seeks to maximise the protection space available to urban refugees and the humanitarian organisations that support them. The URPN brings together relevant organisations to discuss issues of concern to urban refugees and asylum seekers, to coordinate activities (including service provision) among various stakeholders, to share information and to identify issues for advocacy.

Protection Working Group on Internal Displacement (PWGID)

The PWGID was born out of the UN Protection Cluster that responded to the immediate humanitarian concerns resulting from the 2007/8 post-election violence. The Protection Cluster expanded in 2009 to include different themed sub-clusters and to broaden its mandate to counter key policy issues necessary for finding an effective and lasting response to internal displacement. It is now called the Protection Working Group on Internal Displacement and lobbies for the increased protection of IDPs such as through the adoption of a comprehensive legal framework for the protection and assistance of IDPs.
