What happens when an asylum seeker gets rejected?

Answer

If rejected, the asylum seeker has the option to appeal within 30 days, a process which is initiated in writing of the intention to do so. The appeal should include the full claim as well as highlight areas that an asylum seeker feels may either have been misunderstood, or did not come out clearly during the initial interview.

The appeal interview is conducted by another UNHCR officer and considered by a different panel. If rejected on appeal, an asylum seeker may have the case reviewed only on technical grounds by a panel of UNHCR officers.

The decision made after the case review is final. If an asylum seeker still feels that he\she has valid grounds to be considered for asylum and has been unfairly rejected, he/she may seek redress through the High Court.
